12 PhD Studentships / 3 Postdoctoral Fellowships in Berlin, Germany

The Research Training Group (Graduiertenkolleg) 1458 “Notational Iconicity. On the Materiality, Perceptibilty and Operativity of Writing” at Freie Universitaet Berlin, funded by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), is offering from 1st October 2008
12 Ph.D studentships (full-time) and
3 postdoctoral fellowships
for a duration of 2 years (the Ph.D studentships are extendable for another year).

Closing date for applications: 26th April 2008.

The research training group is dedicated to investigating script/writing as a key subject in the humanities. Its aim is to contribute to a change of perspective from a phonographic, language-centred concept of writing to an iconographic, language-neutral concept of writing. The founding hypothesis is that both alphabetic and non-alphabetic scripts are hybrid forms that combine discursive and iconic components and that writing is therefore more than simply a medium used to record spoken language. The research training group investigates systematically and/or historically the creative and explorative functions of notation in everyday, scientific and artistic contexts. Academic disciplines from throughout the humanities are involved as well as psychology and computer studies.

More detailed information on the research and study programme and on conditions for application can be found at:

PhD Scholarship in Computational Nanomechanics of Nanocomposites, Ireland

Project Title: Computational Nanomechanics of Nanocomposites
Supervisor: Professor Michael McCarthy, Chair of Aeronautical Engineering
(http://www.ul.ie/~engineer/moredetails.php?sku=127)
Location: Material and Surface Science Institute, University of Limerick, Ireland (http://www.ul.ie/mssi/)
In Collaboration with: Professor William A. Curtin, Brown University, Rhode Island, USA
(http://www.engin.brown.edu/people/Faculty/facultypage.php?id=1106969990)
Funding Duration: Funding is provided for up to four years from Autumn 2008 (subject to satisfactory progress). Earlier completion feasible.
Funded by: The Higher Education Authority of Ireland, through the PRTLI funded
Project: Nanoscience and Nano-scale technologies for Ireland

Candidates with an engineering, physics, materials science or applied mathematics background are being sought for a four-year Ph.D. scholarship in Computational Nanomechanics of Nanocomposites, beginning Autumn 2008.

The outstanding mechanical properties of nanoscale fibres and tubes (e.g. carbon nanotubes) make them highly attractive as potential reinforcing constituents in polymer, ceramic or metal matrices to form the next generation of advanced composites. However, achievement of high performance materials through this approach requires major advances in processing methods and a fundamental understanding of the mechanics of nanoscale reinforcement, which can be quite different to micron-scale reinforcement. A combined Molecular Dynamics (MD) and Continuum Mechanics (CM) approach will be used to elucidate fundamental mechanics issues involved in nanoscale reinforcement in composite materials. MD will be used to develop nanoscale friction and failure laws for input to and validation of CM models for use in materials design studies. Two particular issues to be studied will be fibre-matrix pullout with varying geometric parameters, and fibre-fibre friction and inter-fibre bonding in nanotube/nanofibre bundles.

The scholarship provides full funding for up to four years (subject to satisfactory progress) and covers an annual stipend to the student (beginning at €16,000 and rising in subsequent years), university fees for EU students, and funding for consumables and travel to conferences. NOTE: this does not preclude finishing is less than four years if progress is rapid. Non-EU students may apply, but should be aware that no additional funding is available to cover overseas tuition fees – this would take a large proportion of the annual stipend.

The project is in collaboration with the prestigious solid mechanics group at Brown University, Rhode Island, USA, and the student will have the opportunity to spend time with Professor W.A. Curtin at Brown.

Applicants should hold (or expect to hold by summer 2008) a 1st Class or Upper 2nd Class Honours degree in the fields of engineering, physics, materials science or applied mathematics, with a strong mechanics and mathematics background. Experience in FORTRAN programming, Molecular Dynamics simulations and/or Finite Element Analysis would be helpful.

Applicants should send a detailed CV to Professor Michael McCarthy (email: michael.mccarthy[ at ]ul.ie). Informal enquiries to same email address.

CLOSING DATE: The position will be filled as soon as a suitable candidate is identified, so candidates are asked to send their CV ASAP. Final closing date is 12 noon, 25th APRIL 2008.

Fisher Scholarships: MSc in Mathematical Finance UK

Fisher Scholarships: MSc in Mathematical Finance
Department of Economics and School of Mathematics

The University of Birmingham’s MSc in Mathematical Finance teaches technically trained graduates - including in Mathematics, Science and Engineering – to apply their quantitative skills to financial analysis. Successful completion of the MSc will qualify students to work in quantitative analysis in City of London

Recent advances in theoretical finance and computing power have moved quantitative analysis from the margins of the financial world to its core. Rigorous quantitative analysis is now involved in everything from the design and pricing of individual assets to the optimisation of whole portfolios. Birmingham’s MSc in Mathematical Finance gives highly motivated, high performing students an opportunity to work in this area. It is taught by two top ranked institutions - its School of Mathematics and its Department of Economics. Students take core courses in financial econometrics, mathematical finance and computational methods. Optional modules allow them to hone further their technical skills (e.g. further mathematical finance) or to broaden their economic understanding (e.g. macroeconomics).

The MSc accepts students on the basis of quality rather than quantity. In 2007-08, only one in six applicants were offered places. Thanks to a generous private gift from Andrew Fisher (Birmingham economics 1982; CEO Towry Law), six Fisher Scholarships covering full tuition fees are available. Applicants with first class degrees are automatically considered for Fisher Scholarships as well as internal scholarships offered by the Economics Department, covering from a quarter to full tuition fees. In both cases, scholarships are awarded to the most able applicants, regardless of nationality. Home, EU and overseas students all pay the same fees. This fee structure ensures that the most qualified applicants are accepted, regardless of nationality.

Prospective students are encouraged to apply online via the MSc’s website. Those outside the OECD are encouraged to post any additional material that would help us evaluate their application, including results of standardised assessments such as the GRE and CVs. Non-native speakers of English must attain an IELTS score of 6.5, with no less than 6 in any band. financial institutions, such as banks and hedge funds, or for postgraduate research in mathematical finance.

More information on funding opportunities is provided by the Student Funding Office. The International Office maintains a list of scholarships to which international students may apply.

Applications are accepted on a continuous basis for study to begin in late September.

PhD Studentship in Netherlands

PhD Studentship-Tribology of Fiber Reinforced Elastomers and Thermoplastics -Sustainable Elastomers & Thermoplastics by Short-Cut Fiber Reinforcement
PhD Studentship

Tribology of Fiber Reinforced Elastomers and Thermoplastics

- Sustainable Elastomers & Thermoplastics by Short-Cut Fiber Reinforcement
-

The University of Twente is an entrepreneurial research university. It was
founded in 1961 and offers education and research in areas ranging from
public policy studies and applied physics to biomedical technology. The
University has approximately 2700 employees and 8000 MSc and BSc students
and is the Netherlands’ only campus university.

The chair of Surface Technology and Tribology within the department of
Engineering Technology has a job opening for a PhD-student on the project
“Sustainable Elastomers and Thermoplastics by Short-Cut Fiber
Reinforcement”.

Relatively new short-cut aramid-fiber/elastomer composites show considerably
improved tribological properties, in particular cut, ship and chunk
resistance in truck tire treads. In addition, the hysteretic properties of
aramid-fiber reinforced rubber are greatly reduced, which can immediately be
translated in lower rolling resistance of tires and energy or fuel savings
of cars equipped with short-cut fiber reinforced tires. Short-cut fiber
reinforced tires are therefore very interesting as valuable contributions to
a sustainable world.

Important prerequisites for the improvement in properties of the polymers
with the aramid fibers are a strong adhesion between fiber and polymeric
substrate, respectively a favorable fiber orientation must be established
during processing, in order to prevent anisotropy in friction and wear
properties. Unfortunately, there are no general controls and experiences
available how short-cut fiber reinforced polymers of all sorts need to be
designed with respect to their tribological properties for specific
applications.

Aim of the project is to develop scientific understanding and generic models
for further development of improved short-cut fiber reinforced polymers,
thermoplastic and elastomeric. Reliable tribology test methods, against
different materials (e.g. metals and asphalt) will be used in combination
with state-of-the-art analytical characterization techniques like SEM, TEM
and surface analysis. Experimental investigations will be carried out in
parallel with the development of models to describe tribological properties,
such as friction and wear, on a micro scale, again in relation to the
fiber-matrix adhesion and mean fiber orientation.

This PhD opportunity will suit a person with a degree in physical sciences
(physics, engineering, materials science, etc.).

You will be based at the Laboratory for Surface Technology and Tribology of
the University of Twente and be joining an innovative and diverse group
working on Tribology, Surface Technology and Materials. For more information
on the research group visit www.tr.ctw.utwente.nl

More information on this PhD studentship can be obtained from
Prof. D.J. Schipper: d.j.schipper@utwente.nl

Please send your application, with Curriculum Vitae, by email to
d.j.schipper@utwente.nl.

Research Doctoral Scholarships UK

Research Doctoral Scholarships
Health and Digital Intervention: Breast cancer prevention

The University of Teesside is offering 12 full-time Research Doctoral Scholarships across a broad range of subject areas including: computing, social science, health sciences, engineering and history. The scholarships are aligned to key areas of research strength within the Institute of Digital Innovation, the Institute for Health Sciences and Social Care, the Social Futures Institute, the Institute for Innovation & Development in Engineering and Applied Science and the Centre for Regional and Local Historical Research. The awards will be for a period of three years and include fees (home/EU or international rate) and an annual stipend of £12,600. Successful applicants should be in a position to take up the scholarships in July 2008 or shortly thereafter.

Research Theme: Health and Digital Intervention: Breast cancer prevention
and education

3. The effects of autobiographical accounts of breast cancer patients and an electronically designed BSE skills program on women’s knowledge, beliefs, and behaviours towards breast self-examination (BSE).

The rationale underpinning this study is the notion that women spend hours on their bodily grooming such as putting up make-up and shaving unwanted hairs. However, giving attention to a part of their body which is vulnerable for tumour development, such as their breasts, is not prioritised. A public-health initiative is needed which promotes breast self examination (BSE) on a daily basis in all women from adolescence onwards, such that it becomes as much part of women’s lives as cleaning their teeth or putting on make-up.

4. The effects of autobiographical accounts of breast cancer patients and an electronic bereavement program on the psychological profile of women suffering from bereavement.

The objective of this study is to examine the effects of an electronic bereavement-coping-enhancement programme, based on the principles of arts-and-laughter therapy, on the psychological profile of women who have experienced bereavement. This research will be guided by the nomadic research philosophy of Fox (1999) based on postmodern philosophical ideas of Levinas, Deleuze and Guattari, in which the researcher (health psychologist) has a caring and engaging role, and in which the concepts of ‘celebration of difference’ and ‘a commitment to engagement’ are the pillars. In line with this, the coping-enhancement program is a personalised intervention which has the form of a continuous process, in which actions and interactions between the woman and the researcher will be constantly geared to the objective of changing maladaptive coping into adaptive coping profiles through the use of blogs on the Internet.

Informal enquiries to Professor Anna van Wersch, email: a.van-wersch@tees.ac.uk.

Research Doctoral Scholarships applicants should have at least an upper second class honours degree or equivalent qualification and ideally a postgraduate qualification. The minimum English language entry level is IELTS 6.5 with no grade below 6.0 or equivalent.

MSc/PhD students in Wireless Communications Multimedia Signalling

MSc/PhD students in Wireless Communications and Multimedia Signalling

Call for MSc / PhD students in the area of wireless communications and
multimedia signalling NeTS Research Group Universitat Pompeu Fabra,
Barcelona, Spain NeTS is looking for students coming from renowned universities from
around the world, with a very good grade record, who have a very high
interest in wireless communications, specially those based on the IEEE
802.11 principles, including sensor, adhoc, infrastructure WLANs and
mesh networks.

We are also looking for students passionate about
multimedia communications in the Internet, and the protocols
associated to it. We seek students with a strong background on
communications networks, coming from electrical engineering, computer
science or related fields. Paramount is a desire to learn and push the
limits of current technology, as well as providing new insight into
today’s and tomorrow’s networks and services.
The accepted candidates will participate in several projects in tight
cooperation with other researchers from our group. Positions available
are:

1 PhD / MSc position in “Reconfigurable, adaptive and selforganized
sensor networks”. Sensor networks are formed by small, inexpensive and
resource limited devices that can interact with the environment
(sensing or actuating) and communicate wirelessly with other devices.
The work will consist in the design and implementation of a complete
new protocol stack based on collaborative and crosslayer techniques,
including power control routing algorithms, reconfigurable PHY/MAC
protocols and adaptive self organized multihop clustering algorithms.
1 PhD / MSc position in “Modeling adaptive traffic flows over capacity
varying wireless mesh networks”. Current WLANs suffer from various
impairments which reduce their ability to carry multimedia flows
satisfactorily. One of them is the intrinsic variable capacity due to
the multiple transmission rates used and caused by the distributed
random access to the channel. The proposed thesis will consider the
definition of a mathematical framework to analyze multichannel
wireless mesh networks, based on the IEEE 802.11s/n prestandard, in
order to optimize the QoS and signalling mechanisms (e.g. based on P2P
paradigms) to adapt properly the multimedia traffic sources (such as
VoIP, video streaming).

1 PhD / MSc position in “Next Generation Multimedia Signalling for the
multitechnology, multiservice Internet”. The Internet is undergoing a
dramatic evolution through new architectural paradigms, like the NGNs,
P2Pbased signalling and applications, mobile and wireless access
networks and the like. There is a necessity to design a new set of
integrated signalling protocols, which permit to control the
transmission of multimedia traffic over such heterogeneous networks.
IMS is the current best practice in that area, but its many
shortcomings and high complexity suggest to explore new approaches
that go beyond IMS, like P2PSIP based systems. The goal of this PhD,
thus, is to design, evaluate and standardize new signalling protocols
for the Internet of the future. We offer a three year grant to PhD
students with a MSc already finished. Moreover, for students without a
MsC a four year grant is also possible with the requirement to follow
our master program during the first year.

How to apply
Please send your full CV, together with your student record (as
appropriate) and a cover letter stating your interests and goals to:

Software Engineering Research Scholarship (Probabilistic Verification and Model-Based Quality Evaluation), Australia

Model Based Development (MBD) has established itself as the key approach to software engineering of increasingly complex systems in automotive and aerospace domains. It has proved successful at managing complexity associated with functionality. A new approach is to use model-based techniques also for quality evaluation and predictions. Since most of quality attributes such as performance, reliability, availability, safety, and security have a probabilistic nature, probabilistic verification techniques are the best solution to perform model-based quality evaluation. The research project shall explore the possibilities of probabilistic modelling and verification techniques to reason about quality attributes early in the software development lifecycle.

To get a detailed introduction into this research project please have a look at the following background literature:

- Controller dependability analysis by probabilistic model checking (http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.conengprac.2006.07.003)
- Quantitative risk-based security prediction for component-based systems with explicitly modeled attack profiles (http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jss.2007.11.716)
- Early quality prediction of component-based systems – A generic framework (http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jss.2006.08.014)

Your Benefits:
Basically, the benefits can be summarised as follows:
* You will work on real-world research problems. (There will always be opportunities to cooperate with major software and systems engineering companies.)
* You will be trained in all skills that are required to successfully finish you research project. Our goal is to help you develop the skills, connections, and opportunities required, that ensure a successful postgraduate career.
* You will create research outputs at the highest standards. In today’s world, it is not only enough to be good, students must be great and competitive compared to other graduate students. Please have a look at our own research outputs.
* You will get optimal and continuous supervision. My goal is to give you strong support on your research from a technical side. However, we also try to help my students to develop their personal skills. If you like to know more about my supervision style, we can provide contact details of recently graduated students as reference.
* You study in a friendly and cooperative environment. Australia is known for its friendliness.

We require:
We are interested in a PhD student who has an excellent academic record (first class honours or equivalent with marks above 85%) with background in one or more of the following areas:
- probabilistic logics and probabilistic verification
- probabilistic model checking
- quality attributes such as performance, reliability, availability, safety, and security
- software engineering (in the areas of embedded systems, robotics, etc.)
- software architectures and architecture evaluation
- formal methods in system design
- statistics

Since this project involves working with other PhD students and industrial partner, communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment are especially required.

The scholarship carries a value of AUS$20,000+ p.a., with fee exemption for both Australian and international students. The selection process will be competitive. If you are interested in the research project, please provide the following information via email to lgrunske[ at ] swin.edu.au:
- detailed curriculum vitae
- an (electronic) copy of undergraduate and postgraduate transcripts (first class honours or equivalent with marks above 85% or GPA 3.70/4)
- evidence of English proficiency for non native English speaker (officially required is an IELTS of 6.5 with no band below 6.0, practically scores above 7.0 are preferred).
