PhD vacancy at INSA de Lyon LaMCoS 2009/2010

PhD vacancy at INSA de Lyon LaMCoS
Multi physics & multi phase modeling in lubrication
Host laboratory

LaMCoS - Laboratoire de Mécanique des Contacts et des Structures, TMI group
INSA-Lyon, CNRS UMR5259, http://lamcos.insa-lyon.fr

Context

Lubrication of machine elements represents nowadays important environmental,
economical and technical issues. Minimization of friction losses (environmental and
economical aspects) and film thickness reduction (technical aspect) in lubricated devices
lead to new operating conditions and among them the early lubricating film breakdown or
the presence of multi phase flow.

The work conducted in our group so far showed the
interest in developing multi physic models[1]. However the initial numerical approach
should be left and a new modeling strategy is to be developed. SKF - Engineering &
Research Centre (based in the Netherlands) supports this research activity since the early
phase in 2005. In addition of its financial contribution, the company also provides a part
time visiting professor.

Subject

We propose to develop a new numerical approach of lubricated contact modeling based on
the finite elements method. This approach requires both the coupling between several
equations (Reynolds (a simplified form of the fluid dynamics), Elasticity, Energy and those
describing the physical behavior of the fluid) and the implementation of efficient
numerical methods.

Among the cases to deal with, the coupling between the exit part of a contact (where the
fluid film rupture occurs) and the inlet zone of the following contact offers the challenge
of the entrainment of a gaseous phase to be modeled. Furthermore, the simultaneous
resolution of thin film mechanics and fluid thermodynamics equations could bring
supplementary numerical difficulties.

The overall objective is to develop new numerical tools and to obtain qualitative validation
from tests performed on in-house devices and conducted in collaboration with our
technical staff.

Supervisors

P. Vergne, Directeur de Recherche CNRS, LaMCoS, INSA de Lyon
D. Eyheramendy, Professor, Ecole Centrale de Marseille, Laboratoire de Mécanique et
dAcoustique

Profile

The candidate should have strong elementary formation in mechanical / numerical
engineering with some background in Tribology and Thermodynamics, must be
independent and pro-active in generating ideas and hypotheses. A previous experience in
programming numerical methods and algorithms would be appreciated. Good knowledge
and communication skills in the English language are highly desired. The candidate should
be graduated at the Master level at the start of the thesis, planed in early October 2008.

Application

An interview of the candidates will be organized at LaMCoS.
Send motivation letter, CV, Master report (if available) and references as soon as possible

PhD Scholarship in Sociality and Cognition

Please kindly mention ScholarshipNet when applying for this position
Four-year PhD scholarship at Valladolid University to study sociality and cognition in carrion crows

A four-year funded PhD studentship is available at the University of Valladolid to investigate the relationship between sociality and cognition in carrion crows. Recent investigation on different corvid species has revealed surprisingly advanced cognitive abilities that sometimes rival those of non-human primates. In some species the individuals proved to possess the “theory of mind”, that is the ability of attribute mental states and intentions to other individuals, and to modify their own behaviour according to the intentions attributed to others.

Sociality is though to be a key factor promoting the evolution of intelligence, which appears to be more advanced in species that live in stable groups. However, the adaptive function of intelligence in these species is not yet clear, as it is not fully known how these cognitive abilities are used in nature, what kind of problems they contribute to solve, and how they influence individual decisions in a changing social environment. We intend to address questions about social environment, cognitive abilities, adaptive function of intelligence and cooperative solution of problems in carrion crows kept in captivity.

Supervisors: Dr Vittorio Baglione (University of Valladolid); Dr Daniela Canestrari (University of Granada).

Applications are invited for a fully funded three-year PhD studentship starting in October 2008. The studentship includes a bursary of £12,600 per annum (tax-free) for three years and all tuition fees.

Candidates should hold a good first degree (at least an Upper-Second Class or equivalent) in a relevant subject area.

The Faculty of Health and Life Sciences has made available a number of post graduate bursaries, one of which has been allocated to the social sciences. The bursary provides tuition fees and generous subsistence funding to support your PhD study. Bursaries are offered on a competitive basis and it is anticipated that the successful candidate would commence study as early as possible in the autumn of 2008.

Any area of social science study will be considered, however the strengthening of current strategic areas of importance and critical mass in research suggests the following are most likely to meet with support:

- Social science and Disability Policy
- Social science, criminal/youth justice
- Social science and health (particularly health consumer diversity)
- Social science and youth/childhood

Any combination of underpinning social science disciplines would be acceptable, however we have the strongest supervisory standing in sociology, social policy, psychology and philosophy. We are an applied social science faculty and attention to the social outcomes of primary research would be welcomed. We do however value theoretical, epistemological and conceptual approaches to social and human science issues.

Applications are welcome from citizens from the EU and those with overseas status as well as those from UK. Candidates for whom English is not their first language should hold an English qualification at least equivalent to IELTS 6.5.

EPSRC - Jaguar Cars Research Studentship - Cranfield University

Systems Engineering and Human Factors Department

A Postgraduate Research Studentship part-funded by Jaguar Cars is available for an outstanding student with a background in Psychology and/or Ergonomics. This exciting research will investigate how drivers interact with automotive designs (the Human-Machine Interface … HMI) and will identify how the product design and the associated design process can be improved.

The research will broadly focus on the development of a multi-dimensional self-report instrument measuring the affective and the cognitive domain in response to HMI solutions. Such an instrument would allow product attributes to be quantified as a whole as well as by its component parts allowing HMI solutions to be adapted at an earlier less expensive stage of the design process. However, there is scope for the student to pursue their own research interests within this project.

The studentship will be associated with the Systems Engineering and Human Factors Department at Cranfield University’s School of Engineering. The department houses a multidisciplinary team of psychologists and Ergonomists.

We are particularly keen to hear from candidates with a background in Psychology, Engineering or Human Factors with an interest in carrying out behavioural studies. The collaboration with Jaguar Cars creates an exciting opportunity for the student to contribute to cutting-edge research with a practical application. The successful candidate is expected to register for a PhD.

Value of Award: Maintenance Stipend for a maximum period of 3 years (£12,940 for Session 2008/09), full overseas rate fees and a Research Training Support Grant

Number Available: One
