PhD Studentships, Graduate School of Engineering and Electronics, University of Edinburgh

Metal-organic frameworks for hydrogen purification and catalytic applications – suitable for chemical engineers, chemists, and physicists

Funding is available for two PhD studentships in the School of Engineering and Electronics, University of Edinburgh on two separate metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) related projects. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) constitute one of the most exciting developments in recent nanoporous-materials science, with potential applications in many areas, including catalysis, gas separation and storage. The major advantage of MOFs over more traditional porous materials, such as zeolites, is the greater scope for tailoring these materials for specific applications due to their modular synthesis from corner units (generally metal ions or clusters) and linker units (organic molecules able to bridge the metal corners).

Project 1: Metal-organic frameworks for hydrogen purification

Hydrogen is a potential future automotive fuel as well as an important industrial feedstock. For fuel-cell applications, as well as in many industrial processes, high purity is required. The hydrogen required can be produced either by generating it from steam reforming or methanol cracking processes or by recovering it from hydrogen-rich process streams by adsorbing the impurities using pressure swing adsorption. Such streams are readily available in refineries and petrochemical plants and are sometimes burnt as a waste stream. The scope of this project is to design new adsorbents for hydrogen purification using computational and experimental methods. This is a collaborative project with the Department of Chemistry at the University of St Andrews.

Project 2: Metal-organic frameworks for catalytic applications

To date a large percentage of chiral compounds are synthesised using homogeneous catalysis. Although they are often expensive and their separation/recycling tedious, inefficient and time consuming, homogeneous catalysts often show excellent selectivities and high activities. However there are many advantages to using heterogeneous catalysis, such as easy separation, efficient recycling, minimisation of metal contamination, improved handling that could all result in lower environmental impact and lower overall costs. The aim of this project is to develop chiral heterogeneous catalysts based on MOFs and to study in particular the adsorption and diffusion processes involved. This is a joint project with chemists at the University of East Anglia and the University of Bath.

The studentships
The studentships are available immediately for a period of 4 years (project 1) and 3.5 years (project 2). (They are of different length because the projects themselves have different durations.) The studentships provide a tax-free EPSRC stipend (currently £12,600 per annum), plus university fees at the Home / EU rate. Additional funding is available to cover the overseas fees for non-EU citizens for one of the projects.

For both studentships, collaboration between the chemical engineers at the University of Edinburgh and the partners in chemistry is a very important element and the successful candidates will spend significant periods of time at the partner institutions, learning among other things about material synthesis and characterisation. The ability to be a team player and to work in close collaboration with a team of chemical engineers and chemistry is therefore essential. The successful candidates will have a first class or 2.1 degree, or equivalent, in chemical engineering, chemistry, physics or a related subject.

PhD Studentship in Programme Management (2) - Cranfield University

PhD Studentship

Distributed leadership in programme management

International Centre for Programme Management

Cranfield School of Management - one of Europe’s top management schools - is offering this PhD studentship within its International Centre for Programme Management, a world-leading hub for research into this important emerging discipline. The studentship is tenable for four years from October 2008.

In business and government, programmes are used to transform strategies and policies into desired outcomes and benefits. Programmes usually consist of multiple related projects. The concept of the project manager as a single point of integrative project leadership and responsibility is widely accepted as a fundamental principle of good practice. Now, professional guidelines in the emerging discipline of programme management advocate a similar single, integrative leadership status for the role of the programme manager. In practice, however, the leadership of programmes is inevitably distributed or shared among a changing group of individuals. The collective nature of programme leadership has important consequences for the behaviours and mindsets of individuals and for the governance structures within which they operate. There is a significant opportunity and need for the creation of new knowledge in this domain, and the development of new theories based on empirical evidence.

Applications are invited from exceptionally qualified candidates for this fully funded full-time studentship under the supervision of Dr David Partington. Applicants should have a good first degree in a relevant discipline. Experience of working on projects and programmes is desirable, although not essential. An MBA or relevant specialist masters degree would be an advantage.

The studentship includes full payment of fees at the UK or overseas rate and stipend of £12,940 per annum.

For an informal discussion about the project, please contact Dr David Partington, tel +44 (0)1234 751122, email d.partington@cranfield.ac.uk, Website http://www.som.cranfield.ac.uk/som/research/centres/icpm/

The closing date for applications is 31 July 2008. Full details of the application process, the PhD programme and other PhD projects are available on the School’s website at www.cranfield.ac.uk/som/phd or from the PhD Programme Manager, Wendy Habgood, on tel +44 (0)1234 754373, email wendy.habgood@cranfield.ac.uk.

Based on a solid foundation in mathematical logic, theoretical computer science, artificial intelligence and declarative programming students will acquire in-depth knowledge necessary to specify, implement and run complex systems as well as to prove properties of these systems. In particular, the focus of instruction will be in deduction systems, knowledge representation and reasoning, artificial intelligence, formal specification and verification, syntax directed semantics, logic and automata theory, logic and computability. This basic knowledge is then applied to areas like logic and natural language processing, logic and the semantic web, bioinformatics, information systems and database technology, software and hardware verification. Students will acquire practical experience and will become familiar in the use of tools within these applications. In addition, students will be prepared for a future PhD, they will come in contact with the international research community and will be integrated into ongoing research projects. They will develop competence in foreign languages and international relationships, thereby improving their social skills.

Applicants should have a Bachelor degree (Bologna 1st cycle or equivalent) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Logic, or other relevant disciplines; special cases will be considered. The programme is part of the Master in Computational Logic (Mestrado em Lógica Computacional) and it has various strengths that make it unique amongst Portuguese and European universities:

Curriculum taught entirely in English:

The programme is open to the world and prepares the students to move on the international scene.
Possibility of a strongly research-oriented curriculum.
Possibility for project-based routes to obtain the degree and extensive lab facilities.
International student community.
Direct interaction with the local and international industry and research centres, with the possibility of practical and research internships that can lead to future employment.
Excellent scholarship opportunities and student accommodations.

The European Masters Program in Computational Logic is one of the few European Masters awarded by the European Uni0n`s Erasmus Mundus programme from its first year of existence in 2004. The Erasmus Mundus programme is a co-operation and mobility programme in the field of higher education which promotes the European Uni0n as a centre of excellence in learning around the world. It supports European top-quality Masters Courses and enhances the visibility and attractiveness of European higher education in third-countries. It also provides EU-funded scholarships for third-country nationals participating in these Masters Courses, as well as scholarships for EU-nationals studying in third-countries.

The European Masters Program in Computational Logic is sponsored scientifically by the European Network of Excellence on Computational Logic (CoLogNET), the European Association of Logic, Language and Information (FoLLI), the European Coordinating Committee for Artificial Intelligence (ECCAI), the Italian Association for Artificial Intelligence (AI*IA), the Italian Association for Informatics (AICA, member of the Council of European Professional Informatics Societies), the Italian Association for Logic and its Applications (AILA), and the Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence (APPIA).
