Holland PhD Scholarship Mechanisms of Short Pitch Rail Corrugation - TU Delft

Netherlands] PhD Scholarship Mechanisms of Short Pitch Rail Corrugation - TU Delft

Civil Engineering and Geosciences
The Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences provides leading, international research and education in road and water engineering, earth sciences, traffic and transport control, and delta technology. Innovation and sustainability are central themes. The research addresses global social issues and is closely interwoven with education as well as with the work carried out by a broad spectrum of knowledge institutions. The faculty consists of 17 sections distributed among the Departments of Design & Construction, Hydraulic Engineering, Transport & Planning, Water Management and Geotechnology.

The Section of Road and Railway Engineering focuses on the design, construction, management and maintenance of structures for land-based traffic, and the interaction between traffic and structures. The section has extensive laboratory facilities to perform advanced tests. Advanced mathematical tools are applied for in-depth analyses.

Job description
Short pitch rail corrugation is a type of vertical periodic irregularity on top of railway rails with a wavelength of 2-8 cm. It is a result of the dynamic interaction between the wheels and rails and is one of the major types of damage in most rail systems worldwide. It causes large dynamic contact forces, resulting not only in damages to rolling stock, wheel and rail, but also in rapid deterioration of track quality and noise nuisance, leading to high maintenance and renewal costs and reduced track availability. With the continuous increase in rail transport in the foreseeable future, the problem will be even more pronounced, particularly for networks which are approaching or have reached their capacity limit.

By means of numerical analyses, field monitoring and lab tests, this research aims at a fundamental understanding of the initiation and growth mechanisms of short pitch corrugation, basically the wavelength fixing mechanism and the damage mechanism by wear and plastic deformation. This should finally lead to improved track design to avoid corrugations, possible methods for detection of corrugation root causes in existing track, and action criteria for optimal maintenance. For this research, the Road and Railway Engineering Section at TU Delft is looking for a motivated PhD student.

Requirements
Applicants should have an MSc or the equivalent in Mechanical, Aerospace or Civil Engineering, Applied Mathematics or Physics, with knowledge of Dynamics and Vibration and the Finite Element Method. Candidates should have demonstrable interest and skills in research as well as good communication skills. Proficiency in English, both spoken and written, is a prerequisite.

Conditions of employment
TU Delft offers an attractive benefits package, including a flexible work week, free high-speed Internet access from home, and the option of assembling a customized compensation and benefits package (the ‘IKA’). Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.

PhD Positions in Color Content-Aware Image Processing, France

Image retrieval consists in finding among a database of target images those which represent the same scene as this represented by a query image. In this context, the key-point is the extraction of efficient descriptors from the images. Several recent studies have shown that color histograms can be very efficient in this context. However, color histograms do not take into account the spatial arrangement of colors and are very sensitive to illumination changes.

Several authors have shown that the spatial organization of colors could significantly improve the performance of the image classifiers. Some spatial descriptors, such as color correlograms, may be used to represent in a global way the spatial arrangement of colors in the image, but they are sensitive to object occlusion and scale variation and are not designed to recognize objects in cluttered scenes. In very recent works, few searchers propose to extract local descriptors such as SIFT or SURF which have been proven to be more robust to local features. The SURF outperform the SIFT and are less time consuming. However, the SURF are not yet designed to work on color images.

Objectives:
The aim of this thesis is to extend the SURF to: (a) color information, (b) interest point detection and (c) local description. The interest points detected by the SURF approach result from the analysis of the intensity function discontinuities. However, it has been shown that, in the context of fast object recognition, the human visual system is attracted by regions characterized by high visual saliency and that these visual attention regions are not necessarily regions characterized by intensity function discontinuities. On the other hand, we propose to detect interest points by exploiting the color visual saliency in the images. Previous works done in our lab. will be used in this context.Furthermore, the SURF descriptors are based on specific local intensity gradients. Since color descriptors are more distinctive than gray level ones, we propose to determine new local color descriptors that are invariant to illumination changes. Previous works done in our lab. will be used in this context.

Candidacy:
We seek strong and motivated candidates. Selection will be based on: 1. Excellence of the candidate: outstanding achievement in the applicant’s Master of Science degree level in imaging science, computer science, or any discipline pertaining to the quantitative description of image processing, provided that the applicant can provide evidence of the necessary previous knowledge (i.e. a base of minimal competencies) particularly in the fields of computer science fundamentals, and image analysis and signal processing fundamentals. 2. Language ability: the candidates must demonstrate sound knowledge of the language (the requirement for competence in English is equivalent to TOEFL with at least 213 points (computer based)/550 points (paper based) or IELTS at grade 6.5. Knowledge of French will be not compulsory, but will be beneficial. 3. Student motivation to undertake the PhD and relevance to his/her professional development (explaining the application, the present situation, the interest in the PhD degree, the intentions after this PhD degree, …).

The application deadline is June 1, 2008

PhD project: towards an effective and sustainable legal aid system

PhD student
(Noord-Holland), 38 hours per week University of Amsterdam

Job description

________________________________

The Legal Aid Chair was created by the Legal Aid Board and
will cooperate closely with the Legal Profession
Management Chair. Research conducted by the Legal Aid Chair focuses on state
financed legal aid as a policy instrument to guarantee access to justice.
Politicians, academic researchers and legal aid providers have been preoccupied
by this theme for over fifty years in the Netherlands and abroad.

At a
certain point in time, the Netherlands was thought to have the best legal aid system in the world. Still today, the
country enjoys a well-established and relatively comprehensive system. However,
the ideological enthusiasm of the legal aid movement has waned somewhat. From a
business perspective, providing legal aid is considered part of state policy.
The financial viability of the system - in times of prosperity and recession -
is a recurrent and as yet unresolved issue. Chair and the Legal Aid

PhD project: towards an effective and sustainable legal aid system

The project focuses on the issue of which system or type of system would offer
the best prospect of a substantively effective and financially viable access
guarantee to justice.. To this end, studies
and/or contrasting legal systems are in progress, focusing on how the relevant
policy and legal issues are formulated. While design is an important premise,
actual implementation is considered in drawing up a list of strengths and
weaknesses for each system. into a number of largely similar
