Ph.D. position in Combinatorial Scientific Computing at the University

We are looking for an excellent PhD candidate with a background in programming and algorithms.

We have an open position for 3 years in the ParComb project. The project is aimed at designing parallel algorithms for combinatorial problems in scientific computing. The type of problems studied includes, among others, different kinds of coloring and matching problems motivated from applications in scientific computing. The successful candidate will cooperate in developing and implementing working codes that can be used in applied research. Applicants should hold a M.Sc. degree or similar and is expected to work within this project and enter a PhD study. The PhD thesis should be submitted for defense within the 3-year period of the position. A plan for the PhD study will be developed in cooperation with the scientists within the project.

As part of the PhD study the candidate should spend 6 month at the Old Dominion University, USA, working with professor Alex Pothen. Thus an applicant must be eligible to obtain a visa to the USA.

Salary will be paid in accordance with level 43 on the Norwegian government salary scale currently equivalent to NOK 325.800 pr. annum (before tax) which is about 41,000 Euro or 57,000 USD. Payment may be regulated on basis of seniority according to the public wage scale 43-46.

There are no teaching duties. Knowledge of the Norwegian language is not necessary as the working language will be English. The Algorithms group at the Department of Informatics, UiB, has currently 4 professors, 5 postdocs, 8 PhD students, as well as several master students. The group represent a mix of several nationalities (Brazil, China, Denmark, Germany, Luxembourg, India, Italy, Norway, Romania, Russia, Sweden, Turkey).

Switzerland: PhD Scholarships in Biomedical Data Mining

The University of Geneva Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (Computer Science Department) invites applications for two PhD scholarships in the field of machine learning and data mining. The successful candidates will participate in EU-funded projects and investigate advanced knowledge discovery issues related to biomedical applications for their thesis.

Candidates should have an M.Sc. and outstanding skills in at least two of the following areas: machine learning/data mining, mathematics/statistics, bioinformatics, medical informatics, knowledge management. For one of the positions, experience and/or training in biostatistics will be an additional asset. A strong academic record, excellent analytical skills and a clear aptitude for autonomous, creative research will be priority selection criteria. Good programming skills and fluency in English and/or French are required.

The expected start date for both studentships is 1st January 2008.
Initial gross salary will be around 4087 CHF (~ 2500 EUR) per month.

As part of the European research project WASP (Wirelessly Accessible Sensor Population), the EPFL AudioVisual Communications Laboratory (LCAV) is looking for a Research Assistant (100%).

Description
The WASP project aims at developing an autonomous and intelligent infrastructure based on wireless sensor networks with applications in three main areas selected for their societal relevance and technical differences: assisted road transport, elderly care, and herd health control.

We are looking for an independent and creative CS/EE engineer to drive this project. He will also collaborate with other sensor networks related projects in which LCAV takes part, such as the SensorScope project.

Tasks
The main tasks are related to the WASP project and depend on the project requirements:

  • Implementation of communication protocols (simulation and/or implementation on real hardware)
  • Literature review on wireless sensor networks
  • Participation to the project meetings in several European countries
  • Writing of reports on the project-related activities

This initiative builds on current Program research in areas such as land use and greenhouse gas production, urban heat island mitigation, planning for natural disasters, megacities, planning and public health, and green industrial restructuring.

Prospective planning Ph.D. students with an interest in climate change research are encouraged to apply for one or more three-year assistantships, which include full tuition and a monthly stipend.

Georgia Tech is an international leader in the realm of climate change research, and the City and Regional Planning Program builds on this institutional strength through its faculty and its two associated research centers: the Center for Geographic Information Systems and the Center for Quality Growth and Regional Development. Faculty affiliations with the Institute for Sustainable Technology and Development at Georgia Tech, as well as research collaborations with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University, further expand the array of research opportunities for graduate students interested in the emerging field of planning and climate change.

Master Degree Scholarship for 2008-2009 - Marywood University Awards will be made on the basis of three factors: academic promise, normally represented by a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.00 or a graduate GPA of 3.50; professional focus and commitment; and financial need (required for specific scholarships).

File a complete admissions application. It is fully expected that each prospective student who is a scholarship applicant will have a complete admissions application on file with the Office of Graduate Admissions by February 14, 2008. The admissions application provides the supporting documentation necessary to evaluate a scholarship application.

Complete the scholarship application electronically. The scholarship application itself is on a secure server. You must press “yes” if your browser asks you if you wish to display secure items, otherwise Marywood University will not receive any of the information you type on the application upon submission.

If you declare full-time status on the scholarship application, enrollment in nine or more credits in the Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 semesters or what your graduate department defines as full enrollment in structured programs, and are awarded a full-time status scholarship and enroll for less than full-time registration in either of these semesters your scholarship award will be reduced.

2008-2009 Graduate Scholarship Application
Master’s Degree, Educational Specialist Degree, and Post-Baccalaureate Certification Students
(Not School of Social Work Students, Speech-Language Pathology Students, and
Physician Assistant Students)
All material must be submitted by February 14, 2008.

The Committee on Graduate Scholarships expects part-time status students who are scholarship recipients to complete at least nine credits during the 2007-2008 academic year. Your academic progress in 2007-2008 will be considered in scholarship renewal.

Email a scholarship essay as a Microsoft Word document. Please type an essay (300-500 words) clarifying the relationship between your life-goals and graduate education at Marywood. Your essay will also be judged on depth of expression and use of the English language. Your essay must clearly address the following areas:

1. Describe your professional work background and experience.
2. Describe your community leadership activities. Indicate if a volunteer activity.
3. Describe any commendations and appreciation awards as well as undergraduate and graduate academic awards and honors.
4. Describe any special projects, demonstrations, workshops, recitals, exhibits, or whatever may be appropriate to your area to indicate your abilities and interests.
5. What are your short and long range career goals and objectives?
6. What attracted you to your Marywood program as a vehicle for achieving your goals?

Email the essay in Microsoft Word to gradscholarship @ marywood.edu. Your essay should contain your name, social security number, and field of study at the top of the page.

Scholarship selection results will be mailed in early April 2008. Scholarships are available for use beginning Fall 2008; they may only be used to defray tuition for Marywood courses.

Students awarded graduate assistantships for the 2008-2009 academic year who accept those positions are not eligible to receive scholarship awards as well.

Marywood University undergraduate students who are enrolled in formal five-year programs are automatically eligible for at least forty percent of their undergraduate merit award or higher for their fifth year of study at the graduate level provided they are admitted to the master’s level by their academic department.

Neither scholarship nor assistantship awards are renewed automatically each year. It is the responsibility of the student to reapply each academic year.

Saudi Arabia: Scholarship for MS Degree in Chemical Engineering 2008 2009

The Chemical and Materials Engineering Department at King Abdulaziz University (KAU) is seeking outstanding college graduates from all over the world to apply for the Master degree program.

Applicant should hold a Bachelor degree in chemical or materials engineering with an outstanding grade (4.5/5 or 3.5/4 or higher). Applicants holding degrees in other related discipline (e.g Chemistry, physics … etc.) can be also considered subject to certain conditions. A TOEFL grade of 500 or higher is also required.

Accepted students are supported through the Graduate Assistantship Program.
